If you’re looking for a session in the New Mexico backcountry, you’ve probably seen the sandstone bluffs on social media. They’re epic, but they aren't the easiest spot to shoot. I get a lot of inquiries from people who want that dramatic, "edge-of-the-world" look, so I wanted to break down what you actually need to know before you commit to this location.
Why the Bluffs?
The appeal is simple: scale. You get those deep, cinematic horizons and textures that you just can't find in a studio or a standard park. When we shoot here, we aren't just taking photos; we are capturing a specific mood. It’s rugged, it’s quiet, and it looks best during the "golden hour" right before sunset when the light hits the rock layers just right.
What You Should Know Before You Book
There is Zero Fall protection, the cliffs have no railing so the danger is real.
The Light is Tricky: The desert landscape is unforgiving. If you go at the wrong time, you’ll get harsh shadows that kill the detail in your photos. I prefer to schedule these shoots for the very end of the day to ensure we get that soft, even, cinematic light.
Keep it Simple: Because the location is so visually loud, your outfits should be understated. Solid, dark colors (like the black attire in these shots) work best because they create a clean silhouette against the sandstone without clashing with the natural tones.
How I Work
I don't believe in over-posing or staging "cringe" moments. My style is about getting you into the right spot and coaching you to interact naturally while I handle the technical side.
No Capped Deliverables: I hate the idea of a photographer holding your photos hostage. You get all of the BEST photos from the session.
Three Looks: Everyone has a different aesthetic. My workflow lets you choose between a Signature look, a Vintage Film vibe, or a Light and Airy style—we’ll figure out which one fits your vision for these bluffs.
Ready to Shoot?
If you’re ready to get out of the city and want someone who actually knows how to handle this landscape, let’s talk. I’m currently booking for the upcoming season, and I’m happy to help you map out the logistics for your shoot.
